3. Adequate rest. Kids can be temperamental when it comes to bedtime, but it’s your job as a parent to make sure that your child is receiving adequate rest. So if you have trouble getting him down for the night, he awakens frequently, or he rises early, there are a couple of steps you can take. First, cut back on sugar intake, which will only keep him up. Then make sure that you don’t give him water right before bedtime and that he uses the restroom before going to sleep. Finally, think about implementing mandatory naptime. This will give you a much-needed break during the day and ensure that he gets all the rest he needs to support healthy vision, not to mention mental wellness.

4. Exercises. Just like any other part of your body, your eyes can atrophy if they’re not properly exercised. Since a child’s eyes are still developing, you don’t want to work them to hard, but easy exercises like eye rolls and changing focus (from an object up close to one far away) can help to strengthen eye muscles and potentially prevent vision problems.

Thousands 'at risk of losing their eyesight by taking statin pills …

People taking statins to protect against a heart attack or stroke are far more likely to be diagnosed with cataracts, claim scientists.

The condition causes cloudy patches on the lens at the front of one or both eyes, making vision blurred or misty.

It is a leading cause of blindness and at least 200,000 people in the UK are treated each year.

A team from the San Antonio Military Medical Center in Texas compared the eyesight of thousands of patients who took statins and those who didn’t.

In the study, published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology, they concluded: “The risk for cataract is increased among statin users as compared with non-users.

“The risk-benefit ratio of statin use, specifically for primary prevention, should be carefully weighed and further studies are warranted.”

Clara Eaglen, for leading charity RNIB, said: “This is interesting research as cataracts are very common in older people with one in three over-65s being diagnosed in the UK.

“Many people are prescribed statins to help lower cholesterol and if they have any concerns they should discuss this with their GP before taking any action.

“Cataracts can prevent some people from driving, undertaking work that requires fine detail and recognising faces.

“Any research which could help prevent unnecessary sight loss through eye conditions such as cataracts is a welcome step forward.”

Redruth Specsavers supports eyesight health of Africans (From …

Redruth Specsavers supports eyesight health of Africans

People in Africa are set to benefit from a 1,500 pairs of glasses donated from the community of Redruth.

The town’s Specsavers branch has been collecting customers’ used and unwanted glasses on behalf of global sight charity, Vision Aid Overseas.

The charity aims to fight poverty and help improve the quality of life of those disadvantaged by poor vision.

Specsavers Redruth is currently celebrating its tenth anniversary and to mark the occasion staff aimed to collect ten boxes of glasses to send to the charity.

To make it fun for customers to donate their specs, the collection boxes were wrapped up to look like presents. It proved so popular the store exceeded its target. All the collected glasses will now be recycled and the money raised will be used to fund the charity’s work in developing countries. This includes setting up vision centres, training healthcare workers and using the expertise of volunteers to give people eye examinations and treatments.

Jonathan Eva, store director of Specsavers Redruth, said: “As eyesight is something that naturally deteriorates people often discover that they cannot use their glasses anymore. We encourage all of our customers purchasing new glasses to donate their old pair so they can benefit people in countries where quality eyecare is not as readily available.

“Our customers have really embraced the scheme and it’s been brilliant to actually see the boxes of glasses sent to the charity.”

As well as collecting glasses, Specsavers stores nationwide have raised more than £250,000 to improve eyecare in Zambia. This has funded the building of vision centres and training facilities for optometrists and eyecare specialists in Kabawe, Mansa and Lusaka.

Many parents spend countless hours trying to get their kids to stop playing video games and watching television long enough to enjoy a healthier hobby such as playing outdoors. With a new development at the University of Tennessee, parents may begin to appreciate the value of video games a little more!

Video Games as an Eye Exams?

Researchers at the University of Tennessee developed a new type of eye exam for children. The catch is that this exam is no ordinary exam – instead it appears as a simple video game or animation that children must watch or play through.

Research has shown that children learn mostly through visual aid; however, many young children do not get eye exams. This is problematic, since some eye conditions can be treated if they are found early on. With our current eye exam system, it is not possible to detect all types of eye conditions in young children. So, in response to this predicament, three researchers at UT decided to change the system.

The three researchers involved in the video game eye exam project wanted to create a better way to test the vision of young children. Their solution ended up being very effective, cheap, and easy.

How Does It Work?

The researchers invented a device called the Dynamic Ocular Evaluation System, or DOES for short. The invention is essentially a machine that can be used by anyone to test the vision of a child as he or she watches a short animation or plays a short game. The main purpose of the machine is to test the quality of the child’s vision, but also to look for abnormalities such as dyslexia. The device can also detect autism.

DOES is an extremely operator-friendly machine. One can be taught how to use the machine in just a few minutes, which makes the device very valuable to doctor’s offices around the world. In addition to being easy to use, the machine also eliminates the need for eye dilation. Further, children don’t even have to respond verbally while taking the exam! This is especially great for very young children, who would not even know they were being tested.

The machine first tests for binocular refractive risks, neural issues, ocular alignment, and scattering, among other conditions. As the animation continues, the child is tested for less dangerous issues such as ADHD, PTSD, and autism. DOES also tests for lazy eyes and crossed eyes. DOES is especially important for children with a lazy eye.

One scientist commented that lazy eye tends to develop before a child turns six years old, due to one eye being better and stronger than the other. The bad eye is essentially cut off from the brain since it does not perform well, causing vision to be lost in that eye. By using this machine, the problem can be detected early on and prevented altogether.

All of the results from the exam are recorded digitally, which makes it very simple to transmit the results to a specialist for analysis if necessary.

Why is DOES Necessary?

The main researcher in charge of the project noted that very few kids have their eyes tested, and those that do have tests that are inadequately performed – that’s simply where our technology is at this point.

These researchers wanted a more effective and accurate way to detect eye problems in children at a young age. Some ocular diseases need to be treated as soon as possible, so using the DOES to screen children can help many kids get the treatment they need.

Some industries have already shown an interest in the machine which is currently undergoing additional research and trials at a Tennessee Walmart Vision Center. The scientists in charge hope to compare their results to other eye exams and see where their machine stands. Then, they can alter or improve the machine before marketing it.

It may be a while before we see any of these machines around, but the results so far look very promising.

Cataract Surgery Tied to Lower Death Risk for Patients With Vision …

FRIDAY, Sept. 6 (HealthDay News) — Beside enjoying better eyesight, people who undergo cataract surgery may see another advantage: Those with cataract-related vision loss who have surgery to improve their sight have a lower risk of death than those who don’t, a new study suggests.

Researchers looked at 354 people, 49 and older, in Australia with cataract-related vision loss who underwent an initial assessment between 1992 and 2007 and had follow-up visits five and 10 years after the first exam.

Those who’d had cataract surgery had a 40 percent lower long-term risk of death than those who did not have surgery, according to the study published in the September issue of the journal Ophthalmology.

Previous studies have suggested that older people with cataract-related vision loss had a higher risk of death than people the same age with normal vision, and that cataract surgery might reduce this risk.

“Our finding complements the previously documented associations between visual impairment and increased mortality among older persons,” study co-leader Jie Jin Wang, of the Westmead Millennium Institute, said in a journal news release. “It suggests to ophthalmologists that correcting cataract patients’ visual impairment in their daily practice results in improved outcomes beyond that of the eye and vision, and has important impacts on general health.”

The reasons why cataract surgery may reduce death risk aren’t clear, but may be due to factors such as better physical and emotional well-being, an improved ability to comply with prescription medications and greater confidence associated with independent living.

While the study found an association between having cataract surgery and lower death risk for those with cataract-related vision loss, it did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship.

Wang noted that some people may have had other health problems that prevented them from having cataract surgery and these other health problems could explain why people who did not have cataract surgery had a higher death risk.

Cataract is a leading cause of visual loss and affects more than half of Americans by the time they are 80 years old, according to the news release.

Just 15 Minutes a Day

What did I actually do to improve my vision?  There were eye movement and visualization exercises based off of the ones that Bates recommended.  The exercises only took about fifteen minutes a day.  It was hard to stick with it in the beginning, but I’m glad I built up some discipline, because within just a month I started to achieve improvements.  A couple of months later, things were actually much better.  I stopped using my glasses all the time.  There were also some other improvements.  I had fewer tension headaches than I did in the past.  There were also recommendations included in the eBook for treating the ones I did have which were caused by eye strain.
