Windows to the world: How to maintain healthy vision – Natural News

(NaturalNews) Albert Einstein once said “Small is the number of people who see with their eyes and think with their minds.” So true even today but the focus, if you will pardon the pun, will be on maintaining and improving literal vision as you work on your figurative one.

Most people live with a decrease in vision and as they get older, their vision will deteriorate. Decreases in our vision, much like any other aspect of our body, are more likely linked to poor nutrition, stress and prescription drug use. It is given that slight variations in the shape and the length of the eye may cause abnormal vision (e.g. near or farsightedness) but this reason does not affect the majority of people experiencing eye troubles. All too often conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts are attributed to factors listed above as well as nutrient imbalances, exposure to chemicals, and cigarette smoking.

Optimizing eye health

Diet and supplements: Highly processed foods wreak havoc on our sight because they provide little to no nutrition while robbing our body’s nutrient stores. Avoid this vision trap and consume minimally processed and organic foods. Any supplements taken should be all natural. Avoid supplements that contain artificial or synthetic vitamins and minerals to maximize bio-availability and absorption. Focus on the following nutrients to maintain or improve eye health:

• Zinc
• Selenium
• Vitamin C
• Vitamin A
• Vitamin E
• N-acetyl-cysteine
• Ginkgo biloba

Stress management: Under stress, people naturally experience what is called “tunnel vision” where the loss of peripheral vision occurs to narrow the focus to what is directly in front of them. Over time, the constant physiological shifting of focus due to chronic stress can alter vision. In addition, during times of stress, the blood flow to the eyes becomes restricted and again over time, can lead to degeneration. To add insult to injury, the loss of vision creates a stressful situation and the stress causes more vision loss. Anti-stress techniques such as positive visualization, exercise, and meditation are great ways to reduce or mitigate stress and damage to the eyes.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): In TCM, acupuncture is used to relieve and adjust eye tension allowing for a normalizing of vision. Also, eye exercises are prescribed to maintain improvements from the acupuncture sessions.

In addition, Ayurvedic medicine and craniosacral therapy can provide relief depending on the root causes of the vision problem. Suffice it to say it is necessary for a person to seek advice from a trusted, holistic-minded healthcare professional to assist in the worthwhile journey to proper vision.

Best Eye Exercises for Kids | Rebuild Your Vision

Best Eye Exercises for KidsWhen it comes to their children, parents are always going to want the best for them. Whether that means success in everything life has to offer or overall health and well-being, we want our kids to be happy, healthy and, well, perfect! There is no denying that many children today suffer from poor vision, as well as eyestrain. But what can you do to help your children – are eye glasses or contacts really the only viable solution to correct a child’s vision? While contacts and glasses are certainly a safe way to ensure your child can see properly, neither of these products really fix the root of the vision problem.

In reality, contacts and glasses can’t prevent your (or your child’s) eyes from growing weaker over time, which only results in needing stronger corrective lenses. But, there is another option! Eye exercises are a great way to help children build and maintain strong eyesight naturally, without the use of contacts or glasses.

Why Eye Exercises?

Eye exercises are safe. They are also designed to strengthen the eye over time, improving vision instead of just placing a lens in front of a damaged eye. A lens, whether it is in the form of glasses or contacts, will do nothing to help improve your child’s vision. You simply can’t correct the source of the problem with lenses.

Performing eye exercises is also easy and fast. Even young children can be taught to use basic eye exercises to improve their vision. Eye exercises are ideal for children of all ages because teaching kids to strengthen their eyesight early on will benefit them as they grow older – the longer they can avoid eye glasses and contacts, the better!

Eye Exercises for Kids

Below are some really easy eye exercises you can teach your children. Be sure to help them understand the importance of caring for their eyes. Also, make sure you supervise your kids until you are sure they can handle the eye exercises on their own!

Memory games: These kinds of exercises can be located online and are especially fun for children. The purpose of these games is to increase your child’s visual memory. In most games of this nature, a picture is shown briefly, and then the participant must try to remember as much about the picture as possible. The more you can recall, the better! You can also recreate this type of exercise with your own pictures.

Eye shift exercise: It is really important for children to learn to shift their eyes quickly between objects at different distances. One exercise to help with shifting vision involves a pencil and a calendar. Place a calendar on the wall and have your child stand at least 10 feet away while holding a pencil vertically in front of his/her face.

Instruct your child to focus on the pencil, and then to look at the numbers on the calendar. Then, have the child look back at the pencil. Repeat this at least 10 times. You can also change the amount of distance between your child and the calendar.

Tracking exercises: These exercises are great for kids because they help the eye keep track of words while reading. Kids who struggle with skipping over words, switching up the order of letters, and losing their spot while reading a text will benefit from this exercise. Hook a ball to some string or a shoe lace.

Hang the ball so that it is even with your child’s nose, and ask him/her to watch the ball as you swing it back and forth. Repeat this exercise while swinging the ball side to side. Your child should be following the movement of the ball with his/her eyes only – no head movements!

Rotating exercise:  This one is really simple! Instruct your child to rotate his/her eyes in a clockwise motion. After completing one full circle, your child should blink and then proceed to rotate his/her eyes in a counter-clockwise motion. Repeat several times, making sure they are blinking in between.

Eye “writing” exercise: Have you child face an empty wall, preferably not one that is a bright color. Tell them to write something, anything, with their eyes only. Do not let your child move his/her head to do this. Moving just the eyes in the shape of many different letters can really strengthen the eye muscles. It’s also a more entertaining exercise for children!

“Clock” exercise: First, tell you child to imagine a large clock. Have them look at where the center of the clock would be to start, then say a number and ask your child to look where it would be on the clock. Finish by looking back at the center. Repeat this at least 10 times, and remember to instruct your child to use his/her eyes only!

Additional Assistance

After teaching your child the simple eye exercises above, you can also check out our Rebuild Your Vision Program. With your assistance, your child can greatly benefit from the exercises included in our program.

In addition to our program, there are 17 vitamins we recommend taking to support eye health. However, please keep in mind you should consult with your child’s doctor before starting him/her on a vitamin. Just make sure your children are eating a healthy diet – a good diet coupled with these eye exercises will help your child enjoy the benefits of naturally healthier eyes!

More on the Continuing Saga of My Eyeballs (or How to Improve …

Back in March of this year, I wrote a post telling you how my eyesight has been improving ever since I started drinking all these green smoothies. To recap, I went into the optometrist’s office this past January because my eyes were bothering me so much; terrible headaches, having a hard time reading, etc. My prescription at the time was -400/-375. I left the office that day with a new prescription of -275/-275! What was the big change? The green smoothies!

Now, let’s speed through time a few months. Happy me, happy cool retro glasses, no more headaches. For awhile. Then it started again. I noticed that at a distance, things were doubling up on me, and I just couldn’t read with my glasses on at all. With them off, things up close looked crystal clear, and I felt much better. I found myself pulling my glasses off whenever I was at home, even though -275 meant I still tripped on stuff if you left it out there (apologies to my dachshund who blends with the rug). So in June I headed back to the optometrist.

I reminded her I was the smoothie gulper and that I suspected my vision had improved again. Not surprisingly, she was hesitant to believe that was the cause. So we did another full eye exam. Results? -225/-225! Incredible. We were both floored and ended up discussing smoothies while she wrote up a new prescription and I handed over my glasses for replacement lenses. I also told her my “magic” smoothie, the one I’m sure is doing the most of the work on my eyes: 1 banana, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 2 handfuls kale, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, about 2 1/2 cups of water. (This is my breakfast which I gulp while tending to the family zoo. I drink one or two other concoctions a day as well.)

Interesting side note here: I did a bit of research to figure out how to further strengthen my eyes. As I spent less time with glasses on, I noticed my eyesight was quite good close up, but only for short spells. Then they’d get all tired and I could no longer focus well. Figuring my eyes were just unaccustomed to seeing without the help of glasses, I dug around on the Internet for some help. I ran across a Dr. Oz video in which he discusses ways to improve eyesight. (Notice the last and most effective thing he mentions: a green smoothie! One that includes similar elements to what I drink each day: dark leafy greens, seeds high in Omega 3’s, etc. And I use the blueberries, which are excellent for eye health.)

Now it’s mid August, and guess what? My glasses are bothering me again. I keep pulling them off, and I rarely wear them in the house. I still need glasses in the house, yes, but the prescription I’m using is bothering me. So I stumble around as best I can, although my sight is drastically different than it was a year ago.

I recently got contacted by an online store that sells prescription lenses and would like to send me some glasses to test, so I asked for a -200/-200 pair that I’ll be reviewing on dkMommy Spot soon. Because I gotta tell ya, replacing my lenses every couple of months is an expensive side effect!

Will I lose my need for glasses eventually? I don’t know. I’d like to think that could happen, because so far there is no plateau in sight. In the meantime, I’m going to continue enjoying my smoothies and see where else this takes me. I’m thinking maybe x-ray vision would be nice. That or bending steel. Or I could be like Samantha on Bewitched! Yeah, I’d totally go for that instead. Wrinkle my nose, have a clean house, and sit around reading the rest of the day. Without glasses.

UK to improve eyesight among Rwandans

The UK’s Department for International Development has invested £250,000 in British charity Vision For A Nation that will be used to buy glasses to be distributed across Rwanda in a effort to help improve vision among the population.

The UK government this August 2013 revealed that the adjustable glasses to be donated by the British charity could improve the vision of thousands of people in Rwanda.

“These affordable, self-adjustable glasses are a real game changer. British ingenuity like this can transform the lives of millions of visually impaired people across the developing world. I’m proud that British inventors and designers are responsible for breakthroughs that continue to improve the world around us,” said Justine Greening, Development Secretary.

The glasses that are focused using an adjustable dial costing at  just £1 per pair were developed by Oxford-based firm Adlens.

The British charity’s gesture comes after training 700 nurses across the country have so far acquired basic skills in conducting vision assessments and providing treatment after undergoing training in eye care treatment which started in December 2012 and is expected to go through the end of 2013.

Jean Marie Vianey Bisangimana, an Ophthalmologist at Kabgayi Hospital, said the programme will help the hospital improve service delivery.

The hospital receives over 120 patients every day from Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, he said.

The skill development program targets 1,600 nurses from 417 community health centres throughout the country, according to Abdallah Uwihoreye, the Vision for a Nation Foundation Programmes Manager.

Rwanda also embraced Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital in 2012, making it the first foreign specialist establishment, which is most likely to become a regional eye referral centre.

The aim of this hospital is to stop any referrals for eye treatment outside Rwanda. We have advanced eye investigational services and a network of over 59 hospitals and a pool of 350 specialists from where we can perform specialised care,” said to John Nkurikiye, the hospital’s medical director.

According to officials, 0.5 per cent of Rwandans are blind with most cases attributed to the cataract eye disease.

Tablets Could Improve Your Eyesight- But Which Brand Is Best …

Age-related macular degeneration is one of the world’s most common eye conditions, affecting an estimated 1.8 million Americans aged over 40. The condition is an eye disorder associated with ageing and affects the sharp central vision in the eye due to damage to the macula (the central part of the sensitive retinal tissue at the back of the eye). As the condition develops, the sufferer’s central vision worsens, gradually making it difficult to carry out daily activities such as driving, reading and writing.

However, there is hope for sufferers in the unexpected form of digital tablets. The most popular tablet brands include Apple, Samsung and Amazon’s Kindle readers, with tablet sales predicted to exceed those of PCs by the end of the year. New research carried out at the American Academy of Ophtalmology discovered that people who regularly use digital tablets for reading may be able to read more quickly and comfortably than those who simply read from printed texts or newspapers. Of the 100 participants who took part in the study, everyone was found to read fastest on the digital tablet and even managed to increase their reading speeds by at least 42 words per minute.

How does it work?

According to the researchers, the main reason why digital tablets improve reading skills is due to the backlit screen of the devices. When the background is slightly lit, it increases the contrast between the letters and the background, making it easier to see the text clearly and comfortably. In addition, both devices make it possible to zoom in on text or show larger fonts, thus improving the clarity of text for all users.

Which brand is best?

Those who took part in the study made the most significant reading speed improvements when using the Apple iPad (an average speed increase of 42 words per minute) whilst Amazon’s Kindle did not fare as well and only improved reading speeds by 12 words per minute. Despite this, it would be interesting to consider the effect on reading     speeds when using the devices in bright light. Unlike the iPad, the Kindle uses a unique paper-like screen to show  clear text in all conditions, even on the beach in the sunshine which could help to improve reading speeds in difficult conditions by increasing contrast sensitivity. The iPad is primarily designed for other applications such as internet, messaging and social media, making the focus less about reading long sections of text.

What does the future hold?

It is hoped that better understanding of how the smart devices screens improve central vision and reading skills could help opthalmologists to advise their patients on the best devices to consider to support their vision. Amongst popular negative press concerning the dangers and risks of prolonged use of digital devices, it is surprising to find positive health results from tablets. Despite this, as with any prolonged work, it is important to avoid spending long periods of time using a digital tablet for reading as focusing on small text can cause eyestrain and headaches. Remember to take regular breaks to keep your eyes feeling comfortable and irritation-free.
