Blind Man Regains Sight by Having His Tooth Implanted in His Eye

A blind man in Britain, Ian Tibbetts, recently had his sight restored through a bizarre medical procedure in which one of his teeth was implanted into his eye. The procedure, known as osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, has two stages. In the first stage, a tooth is removed from the patient, a lens is installed in the tooth, and the assemblage is implanted under the eye socket to allow it to grow blood vessels. The second stage occurs about four months later: The tooth assemblage is removed and implanted into the eye socket, thus restoring vision. It may sound like science fiction, but the procedure has been around since the early 1960s. Tibbetts’ experience with the procedure is recounted in the BBC documentary, The Day I Got My Sight Back.

Tooth Transplant Helps Restore Vision of a Blind | TopNews United …

A blind British man was able to see his twin sons’ faces for the first time after a surgeon transplanted a tooth that restored his vision.

Ian Tibbetts, 43, began losing his vision 16 years back. The vision was lost when a piece of scrap metal from an oven hit his right eye, destroying his cornea at six different places.

Earlier Mr. Tibbetts was able to see through his left eye, but a year after, the complications increased and he became completely blind.

He admitted that he had undergone many unsuccessful treatments so as to get his vision back. The tooth surgery was known as osteo-ondonto-keratoprothesis (OOKP). It was carried out by Professor Christopher Lio at the Sussex Eye Hospital. However, the surgery was not only complex, but it was lengthy.

A lens is placed in a hole drilled in through the patient’s tooth prior to the tooth being placed under the eye socket to grow into a tissue. The tooth is left there for a number of months before being implanted in the eye. There is no chance of rejection because the tooth is part of the patient’s body.

When Mr. Tibbetts was asked to express the moment when he saw the faces of his son for the very first time after the operation, he stated the moment as it was like “ecstasy”.

There is considerable and growing interest in understanding if accommodation can be restored to the presbyopic eye. If accommodation is to be restored, this requires a sound understanding of the accommodative anatomy, the accommodative mechanism and the causes of presbyopia. When the eye makes an effort to focus at near, the ciliary muscle contracts and releases zonular tension around the lens equator to allow the elastic lens capsule to mould the young lens into a more spherical and accommodated form. With increasing age, lens stiffness increases exponentially; however, the ciliary muscle continues to contract with an accommodative effort even in the presbyopic eye. Therefore, if the presbyopic lens can be replaced with an artificial accommodative intraocular lens (IOL) that is capable of undergoing an increase in optical power with an accommodative effort, it may be possible to restore accommodation to the presbyopic eye. Accommodating intraocular lenses would ideally permit the true, dynamic accommodative capacity to be restored to the presbyopic eye. Accommodative IOLs are designed to be surgically implanted in the eye to induce a change in optical power of the eye consequent to ciliary muscle contraction. Accommodation could be produced in a number of different ways with an IOL including through a forward movement of a single optic IOL, increased separation of dual optic IOLs or through a change in lens surface curvatures, for example. There are a number of different designs of so called accommodative IOLs that are in early stage development or in clinical trials, some of which may hold promise for the future.

Chinese boy whose eyes were gouged out given implants | World …

A six-year-old Chinese boy whose eyes were gouged out has been receiving implants at a hospital in southern China from a Hong Kong surgeon who volunteered his services after learning about the brutal attack.

The implants are a precursor to fitting Guo Bin – known as Bin Bin – with prosthetic eyes that will look and move more like normal eyes, but which do not restore vision. Doctors at the C-MER (Shenzhen) Dennis Lam eye hospital also plan to fit Bin Bin with navigation sensors that would allow the boy to get around on his own in familiar places.

“As his parents, we are full of hope,” said the boy’s father, Guo Zhiping. “We have yet to tell him that his vision would be lost forever.”

A personal assistant to Dr Dennis Lam Shun-Chiu said the surgery to fit the boy with orbital implants started on Tuesday afternoon at the private hospital. If the operation is successful, the doctors will fit the boy with cosmetic eye shells, Inggie Ho said.

Many questions surrounding the attack on 24 August remain unanswered.

Police in the boy’s home province of Shanxi say they suspect the boy’s aunt gouged out his eyes. But they have not identified a motive and the woman has since killed herself. The boy’s relatives have said they do not believe she could have carried out the attack.

Guo said the family did not think the police report was credible, because the aunt, who was working in a local factory, would not have had time to commit the crime.

News reports have pointed to family disputes, but Guo said on Tuesday that there has been no argument between him and his brother, or the boy’s uncle.

Guo said Bin Bin and the family arrived in Shenzhen on Sunday and would stay as long as necessary.

The flight to Shenzhen excited the little boy, Guo said. “He had never travelled in a plane before.”

A cataract is the clouding of the lens in the eye that has an affect on an individual’s vision. Most cataracts are related to increasing age; cataracts are very ordinary in older people. The cloudiness in your vision caused by a cataract may affect only a tiny part of the eye’s lens and you may be oblivious of any sings of vision loss. As the cataract expands in size, it will cause more clouding of the lens and distort the light passing through the lens. This may lead to signs and symptoms that are more noticeable.

The lens, where cataracts form, is positioned in the back of the colored part of your eye. The lens focuses on light that passes into the eye, creating clear, sharp images on the retina. A cataract scatters the light as it passes throughout the lens, preventing a sharply clear image from reaching the retina. As a result, vision becomes blurred.

As you age, the lenses in the eyes become less flexible, obscured and thicker. Aging-related changes to the lens cause tissues to break down and to cluster together, clouding tiny areas of the lens. As the cataract continues to expand, the clouding becomes denser and has an affect on a greater part of the lens.

Dealing with symptoms of cataracts until an individual decides to have surgery, include: improving the lighting in your home with more or brighter lamps, making sure eyeglasses or contact lenses are the most accurate prescription possible, wear sunglasses or a broad-brimmed hat to reduce glare during the day, use a magnifying glass to read and limit nighttime driving. Self-care actions may help for a while, but as the cataract continues to develop, vision may worsen. When vision loss starts to interfere with everyday activities, cataract surgery should be considered.

Health Checks Are Essential
