30,000 Sports Related Eye Injuries Every Year

The newest data from Prevent Blindness shows that last year, there were more than 30,000 estimated sports-related eye injuries in the United States.  Water sports were the leading cause, followed by basketball. Eye injuries from all sports include everything from scratches, to fractures of the eye socket, to traumatic cataract and more. Wearing contact lenses during water activities also increases the risk for infections, including acanthomoeba keratitis.

Prevent Blindness has designated September as Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month in an effort to educate the public on the best ways to protect vision while playing sports.  More details are below and we encourage you to visit our dedicated web page at: preventblindness.org/sports-eye-safety
