Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure

The success rate of a Lasik eye surgery is quite high with about 90% patients, who undergo this eye treatment, achieving 20/20 eyesight. The complete form of Lasik is “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis” and, as most would know, is performed to correct refractive errors.

How Lasik Eye Surgery Works

The Lasik eye surgery procedure uses Microkeratome, which is a special instrument. The surgeon uses this instrument to create and cut open a circular, thin flap in the patient’s cornea. A laser beam may also be used to create this thin flap. The hinged flap is folded back by the surgeon to reveal the cornea underneath. This is done so that the surgeon may remove corneal tissue using an excimer laser.

This excimer laser is used to remove small pieces of tissue from the patient’s cornea in order to reshape it. For this purpose, the laser beam employs a cool ultraviolet light, which burns the tissue away. Reshaping of the cornea enables better focus and gives the patient a much clearer vision, 20/20 vision in most cases.

Once the cornea is reshaped, the surgeon then replaces the thin flap that he had pulled back hence, covering the eye from where the tissue was ablated.

In case of myopic people, i.e. nearsighted patients, the too-steep cornea is flattened and in case of hyperopia, i.e. farsighted people, the more-than-desired flat cornea is made steeper. In the case of astigmatism, the laser smoothes the irregularities of the cornea to bring it to a normal shape hence, correcting the vision.

Pre Lasik Eye Surgery

Before the Lasik eye surgery takes place, it is important that the patient has a thorough counseling session with the ophthalmologist in order to gauge the risks and benefits of the eye surgery. The doctor explains in detail the exact procedure that will be performed, the pre-op and post-op precautions that the patient needs to take and most importantly, whether that person is actually a good candidate for this surgery.

There are many tests and exams that an ophthalmologist needs to perform on the patient who is about to undergo a Lasik eye surgery. These tests determine the amount of tissue removal required, whether the patient is suffering from any eye diseases and the exact measurement or mapping of the curvature of the eye.
