power drum sliding on B&L 70 lensometer

I recently acquired one of these in terrific condition with one exception, the power drum slide tension is too loose.

I seem to remember having a similar problem with one years ago and it being a pretty easy fix, but I have the cover off and I’m not seeing it. Can anyone assist? Bonus points for pictures :)

Trial lens set recommendations?

Hello all,

I’m an ophthalmologist working in a hospital, and also part time in a practice where I do a lot of refractions using loose lenses. I’m looking into purchasing new trial lens set and trial frame, as I find the provided ones not quite satisfactory. I have been searching for reviews on different sets online, but haven’t really found any. Some requirements/wishes are:

1. a set that works well ergonomically without undue physical strain (neck, arms, eyes) reaching for/finding the lenses. Perhaps putting the case on top of a inclined tripod stand would work.
2. good visibility of markings, making it easy to locate the correct lens and reading the final result from the trial frame. Illuminated marking on the case/rack?
3. not having to re-mark the lenses after labels fall off.

I have worked with Reichert type sets, all chrome, and find it hard to easily locate the wanted lens. They are densely packed in the case.
The expensive Oculus sets I find somewhat better, but not without issues.

Could you chime in with some observations on what you have found to be good trial lens sets? Such as huge variety available with a huge range in price! Thank you in advance.

Setting up a small surfacing lab

I am looking to set up a small surfacing lab and need some good advice.
My initial investment would be around 30K and I plan on running 50 jobs a day that could go up to 100 within one year.
The mix of materials would be 70% CR39 and 30% 1.56.
About the equipment, I know I am on a tight budget and that narrows down my options…
I am considering a used computerized lens generator – could be a Vista or SGX – ,
two used Toro x2s and a brand new LOH style blocker.
And this would pose my first question: Is it possible to replace or modify the generator´s chuck in order to match LOH´s blocks? Also, if I replace the chuck on the SGX, would it still be able to cut foam laps? And what about LOH´s prism rings? Could I use them on these generators? I like LOH´s prism ring system. When it comes to repeatabilty, I believe it would be far more accurate than electronically generating prism. Besides this, I plan to do the maintenance myself. I would like to know how tech friendly these generators are when it comes time to do the fixing. I do lens edger maintenance and repair most of the time and I am not worried about fixing issues . However, I do worry about buying somebody else´s problem. What about spare parts, service manuals, diagrams and exploded parts views? Is any of these generators way better than the other?
Should I stay away from any of them?
Most of our electrical outlets are 220vac single phase and we also have some 380vac 3 phase. Would this be ok for this kind of equipment?

I wish I could afford a V50 or V75. I cannot right now, unfortunately. I have to add freight, custom duties and taxes and my landed cost would easily climb up to 50K+ …
I know 30k is not much money but it is a start. I would very much appreciate your recommendations in order to get the most out of it.
I look forward to your input.
Fabian.

Mr Orange Edger problem

The edger occasionally not always makes a clacking sound and on the finishing wheel not always destroys the lenses. For some reason the clamps loose their balance and drop the lens on the finishing whell destroying the lens.

Tested the voltage and no problem.

Would like to know if anyone experienced the same problem with Mr. Orange edger.

Service Manual – Schematics For 7e Edger

Anyone know where I can get my hands on the Service/Repair manual(s), or even just the schematics and wiring diagrams, for the National Optronics 7e edger?

I am troubleshooting a video problem, the required voltages that provide power for the display panel’s LVDS Video board are way out of spec and I need to know where these are sourced at. While I could take things apart and see where the cables go, hoping those three wires peel off and connect directly to the source would be a fantasy come true, ribbon cables usually go from one interconnect to another. This means that although I know which board, I still have to trace things back to the source on the board, i.e. physically remove the board and follow the traces.

I want to avoid as much downtime and get the onboard display working again as soon as possible.

Don’t panic, my education is Electronics Engineering and have many moons of experience in Human Machine Interfacing (The stuff that allows you to interact with your machines and hopefully keeps you safe).

If you know which components, and hopefully the part numbers, that are reponsible for this voltage and what the common failure is please share it.

I know the manuals are hard to come by, if they were not I would not be posting this.
